A living, breathing artwork

Stathis Lazarides, founder & garden designer

“Garden design is a unique form of art because the creation and development of a garden is so dynamic. Plants grow and the composition is ever evolving. Materials age, adding an extra, desirable characteristic. It is a living, breathing artwork!”

“The fusion of art, design and horticulture in my work comes from my journey through life and my influences in these disciplines. This is reflected in my clients’ gardens. I can’t think of a more noble thing to do with my time than improving the lifestyle of my clients and giving them a beautiful, soulful, outdoor place to enjoy.”

Rooted in horticulture

Epoch Garden Design was founded by artist and garden designer Stathis Lazarides. A Greek national residing in the UK since 1996, Stathis hails from a line of three generations of plantsmen and women, steeped in horticulture.

He grew up in a rural setting in North Greece watching his father develop his passion for organic vegetable growing, and this built the foundation for his own close relationship with the soil, everything that grows from it and the natural world.

From music to gardens

Although Stathis has always been an avid gardener, his professional path initially took him to a career in art and music. He studied music production at the School for Audio Engineering (SAE) in Holloway, London, and has enjoyed more than two decades of success in the music industry as a producer, DJ and promoter.

He has played alongside the biggest names in the international electronic music scene, such as Carl Cox, Danny Tenaglia and John Digweed, and has travelled the world playing his music, including at the legendary Ministry of Sound and Fabric nightclubs in London. He also played a vital role in the development of Cavo Paradiso on the island of Mykonos, now one of the most famous clubbing destinations on the planet.

Art, design and plants

His love for art, design and plants came together in 2010, when he started experimenting in his own 500 sqm garden after visiting the Chelsea Flower Show. As well as trying new ideas when designing and building his garden, Stathis fused art installations and plants such as air plants and succulents, and created various private commissions for clients.

In 2018 he took the next step and studied garden design at the Oxford College of Garden Design, graduating with a distinction. He was already working on new projects before finishing his studies, and has completed more than 50 projects since.

Epoch Garden Design was nominated in 2022 for the prestigious Pro Landscaper Small Project Big Impact awards in the design category, and has won numerous Best of Design and Best of Service awards on Houzz.

Stathis collaborates closely with an extensive network of amazing craftsmen and women, artists and contractors, and together they make even the most demanding projects a reality.
